Technology evolves, and with the evolution of technology, our lives are made more convenient with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a revolutionary invention that helps gather information, generate ideas, and organize data. Recent examples of this, and the spotlights of this essay, are Chatbots and ChatGPT.

 

What’s impressive about Chatbots is that they allow new language learning methods that improve efficiency. Utilizing Chatbots, one could create a language learning foster mother for children. During a certain period of a human’s life, between their birth and the age of ten, they are capable of learning new languages at an astonishing rate. This way, children could learn a second mother tongue, one from their biological mother, and one from their Chatbot foster mother. As we all know, language learning during our twenties is an arduous task, often requiring much more time and effort than when we are learning our first language. This is an ambitious proposal and very impressive indeed.

 

Chatbot foster mothers are useful, but they also pose several issues to be discussed. One of the many issues, and the most important one at that, is Chatbots are not to replace their biological parents in the act of parenting. It’s only logical that upon the invention of Chatbot foster parents, some human parents would develop the habit of negligence. Parental negligence could lead to childhood trauma, which, in turn, leads to poor mental health for the child when they are growing up. Childhood trauma is very detrimental to the lives of many, and in comparison, the tradeoff to be able to speak a second mother tongue is barely worth it. Aside from the possibility of developing childhood trauma in the child, Chatbots may also cause emotional detachment. As of now, AI technologies are unable to accurately recreate human emotions. The result of children nurtured solely by AI Chatbots without the care of their biological parents could be disastrous.

 

With Chatbots comes AI-generated information with tools like ChatGPT. Although it is very useful in quick idea generation, there are some disadvantages in it. AI generates ideas using the data it collected from various sources, which means many ideas it generated are actually present in real life. This could lead to a general decline in creativity in the users. AI-generated texts could lack credibility, which means that they may not be true. AI is not able to verify the authenticity of information it is basing its text generation on. As long as this issue is not solved, for one to use AI-generated information, they should be doubtful of their credibility and verify it before using them.

 

In conclusion, artificial intelligence is useful in many ways but requires a lot of care when using it. Without a doubt, it possesses great potential in terms of providing assistance to various daily tasks and improving the well-being of human beings. If there be a day that artificial intelligence was improved beyond what it is like today, it is well worth waiting for.
